Javier Gutierrez Vargas, 23, and Juan E. Marin, 28, are charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and a single count of disorderly conduct, State Police said on Tuesday, March 26.

The alleged attack happened just before 2 p.m. on Monday. It's unclear what started the altercation, but the truck driver, whose name was not released, and the two men in a Volkswagon GTI pulled into the breakdown lane of I-495 South in Bolton.

Investigators said an argument ensued and Vargas and Marin attacked the truck driver with a hammer. His injuries were severe, but not considered life-threatening. Doctors at Leominster Hospital were caring for him Monday night, police said.

The duo jumped into the Volkswagon and sped off until they were captured by police in Marlborough.

One of the men was taken to Marlborough Hospital after they were injured in the fight with the truck driver, police said.

A woman in the car was not charged.
